Pet tales: Litter of 11 pups makes lucky dozen
This August, our 3 year old Standard Poodle, Athena had her only litter. We went from one family dog to a dozen. Our children helped to name (from Agamemnon to Zelda), weigh and give them colored collars that afternoon. They were 7 to 9 ounces each. Eight weeks later they were 7 to 10 pounds, a sixteen-fold increase! Our children documented this at: www.athenaspuppies.blogspot.com
Athena took about 40 minutes to learn what to do during birth and then became a super mom. We only needed to trade in the smaller puppies during nursing, so they got a turn.
Even now when she “obtains” her favorite treat, half a loaf of bread, she will put some slices in with the puppies.
Not only have the puppies grown physically, they have developed personalities: curious, courageous, leader, playful, adventurous, loving, and more. They explore every inch of the yard: under the porch, rolling in the herbs, pulling on the grape vine, and chasing their mother, Athena.
Choosing to have a litter is difficult. I needed to test Athena and make sure that her hips, elbows, eyes, skin and health were good. It is important that bad traits not be passed on in a breed. A new friend helped me identify a tested and healthy sire. Throughout, I received helpful advice from someone who formerly raised standard poodles. She wisely counseled that I might want an x-ray to learn how many puppies to expect. The vet and I counted at least 10, if not more.
It has been a lot of work and fun. Friends and family have been wonderful stopping by with supplies of newspaper and taking time to hold each puppy. With their help, the puppies are well socialized. Now each of these sweet creatures needs their own loving home.
